How To Highlight 3 Different Ways

This week on my makeup desk are my favourite makeup product, highlighters.  I love changing up my makeup look with different highlighters techniques. Who knew there was so may different ways to highlight. I certainly didn’t when I was a beginner. Like most makeup lovers, I am obsessed with highlighters. Highlighters are so on trend at the moment and I can’t see them leaving us anytime soon. If you only ever used the traditional powder highlight fear no more I am here to teach you ways to use different highlighters.

Liquid Highlighters

I love this consistency of a highlighter  Why ? Because there are so many ways to use liquid highlighters. Feeling a little dewy, mix a small amount of liquid with your primer or foundation and apply as normal to give your face that desired glow and dewiness. For a more positioned highlight apply it before your foundation wear you want a glow. Top of your cheek bones, nose and cupids bow. For a more intense highlight  apply over top of your foundation and gently buff out. I like to use my fingers as the warmth helps blend into the skin.  Listed below are my go to liquid highlighters.

Cream Highlighters

A stick formula that has a punch, my absolute favourite cream highlighter is the Benefit Watts up. Just like the liquid formulas you can use it in so many ways and it can be applied anywhere. I love using under my foundation on those high points and then going over top of my foundation and blending out. If you going to an intense glow use over top of your liquid. Listed below are my cream favourites.

Powder Highlighters

The most popular highlighter formula is powder highlighters. Can be used alone to create an everyday glow, used over top of the cream or liquid highlighters to really give you that intense on point highlight or used as an eyeshadow.  I am loving the MUA Highlighter, the detailing is stunning for a start and the price point is so affordable. I like to apply my powder highlight with a small fan brush on the top of my cheek bones, top of eyebrows, brow bone, cupids bow, and tip of nose I love to glow everywhere.

I used to always be a powder highlight kinda girl, but I’m starting to enjoy cream and liquid highlighters much more now, especially when I want a dewy look.

I love cream and liquid highlighters! They’re so much more flattering than powder highlighters on my big pores. Awesome post – thanks for reminding me to dig out my cream products again!

  • Beauty and the Beach

really nice tips.. I’m still trying to figure out the best way to highlight my face
as I have oily skin and get a little bit of texture on top of my cheekbone and
    highlight tends to accentuate that..

  • Zerin Hassan

GREAT Tips! I always fail with highlighting

  • I agree with Georgia, I never lean towards liquid highlighters but I totally need to. Mind you, I’ve been loving Watts Up!

I’ve just branched out to cream highlighters with the Sleek “Precious Metals” palette – it’s beautiful! I love the look of that Nude By Nature cream highlighter – might have to pick that one up next! x

  • Great post! I love mixing in a little Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector liquid with my foundation for a glow as well but I think powder highlighters are still what I reach for most.

  • Great post! I love using liquid highlighters mixed with my foundation 😀 I need to try that Benefit Watt’s up!

  • I have a few highlighters from each category too but I’m so lazy I always just tend to use powders because they’re easiest! I do love Becca’s shimmering skin perfectors (liquid) though, they look so natural and dewy on the skin!

  • Lubz

I love my cream highlighter and setting it with a powder one – (Hourglass Ambient highlight in Dim Light). I’m someone who prefers a subtle glow rather than the bling bling highlight. Great post Toni!

I definitely lean more towards powder highlighters but i do try to dabble in liquid highlighters. I find that cream highlighters are the ones I just can’t get myself to like.
